Amber Johnston
2000 Enrico Fermi HS Graduate.  1998 Junior National Championship Swimming Champion: 200Y Breaststroke. Senior National Qualifier: 100Y Breaststroke, 200Y Breaststroke, 100M Breaststroke, 200M Breaststroke. Ranked 131st in 1998 FINA World Ranking 100M Breaststroke.  National Age Group Top 16 times (1998): 200Y breaststroke.  Honored as a USS Academic All-American and CT Scholar Athlete. Named 3-time All-American swimmer in 100 yard breaststroke (1997-99). Won Class L in 1998 with record time of 1:04.70; class record stood 14 years. Won 1998 State Open with personal best 1:04.57. Second in L and Open in 1997; third in L and Open in 1999; third in M in 1996 as freshman. Ranked in top 40 in nation three straight years, high of 24th in 1998.  Competed with UCONN, and swam 100 & 200Y breaststroke. Named Academic All-American while at UCONN.

Susan Pelligrinelli
1983 graduate of Enfield High School.  Participated 3 years in Track, and named Captain her senior year.  Played varsity Field Hockey 3 years, and named captain her senior year.  Was selected as Field Hockey MVP in both junior and senior year (1982 CCIL Champion and Class M State Runner-up).  Attended Westfield State University and played 4 years of Field Hockey, 1986 Most Valuable Player.  Named to the 1985 and 1986 Massachusetts State College All Conference Teams.  Selected as an All-American, and was chosen to play in the Northeast Field Hockey Regional and National Tournaments.  Coached girl’s lacrosse at both youth and high school levels.  Coached field hockey for 22 years at Southwick-Tolland (MA) Regional High School.  Accumulated over 150 wins including 6 League Championships, 3 Western Massachusetts Championships and twice a State Runner-up in 14 years as varsity coach.

Steven Levinthal
Moved to Enfield in 1968 and spent the following 27 years coaching the Stafford High School Cross Country and Softball teams to unprecedented success, winning 12 State Championships.  Combined, his teams accumulated 810 total wins.  His boys’ cross country teams won 518 meets, losing just 51 times.  His boys’ teams raced to state championships in 1972, 1976, 1979, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1994 & 1995.  The girls were also dominant, winning 109 times and losing only 15 times.  The girls claimed state championship victories in 1990, 1991 & 1993.  The National Athletic Coaches Association named him National High School Cross Country Coach of the year in 1992.  At the time of his death in 1995, he was the sole coach in the history of both the boys’ and girls’ cross country programs.  His softball teams also amassed 271 wins and earned a state championship title in 1976.  In 1996, he was recognized with induction into the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Dave Whinnem
1991 Enfield High School graduate. Dominated in swimming while earning  All-CCC East 1990 and 1991; CCC East champion in 500 yard freestyle (1990) and 100 yard breaststroke (1991), 6th in Class M in 100 breaststroke and 200 freestyle (1991); school record in 100 breaststroke (1:04.05 in 1991); Track & field: 3 years.  Attended Ashland University and continued his success in swimming: 1992, All Penn-Ohio Conference team in 100 breaststroke (school record 1:00.52) and 1650 freestyle; 1993, All Penn-Ohio Conference team in 100 breaststroke (broke own school record, 1:00.39 – conference champion), 200 breaststroke, 500 freestyle, 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay, 800 freestyle relay; set 200 breaststroke record at 1992 Wabash Invitational in Indianapolis, which stood for seven years.

Karen Scavotto
2000 Enfield High graduate.  Started shooting archery at the age of eight, competed for nearly 20 years and was a member of the United States Archery Team for most of her career.  At 17, Karen became the youngest member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic Archery team and won individual Gold and team Bronze medals at the Sydney Golden Arrow Olympic Test Event in 1999.  While competing at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, Karen was ranked 4th in the world. She finished 14th individually and 5th for team in the 2000 Olympics.  Some of her other accomplishments include winning over 20 national championships, broke several Junior World Records, Junior U.S. National Records and U.S. National Records,  named United States Olympic Committee Athlete of the Month in September 2000, member of the 1998 and 2000 Junior U.S. Outdoor World Championship Teams, team Silver at the 2001 Indoor World Championships, member of the 2007 U.S. Outdoor World Championship team, team Bronze at the 2007 Pan American Games, team Bronze at the 2007 Good Luck Beijing Olympic Test Event, Silver at the 2007 El Salvador Continental Qualification Tournament and  Bronze in the 1999 US Open, and Gold in the 2008 & 2008 US Open. Graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Industrial Engineering.

Diane Derose
1974 Fermi High School graduate and life-long resident who has officiated high school field hockey for more than 37 years.  1978 graduate from Emmanuel College (B.A.) and University of Hartford (Ma ED). Her Field Hockey officiating is for high school games in North Central Connecticut and Division III collegiate level. She is a member of the Connecticut Field Hockey Association Board of Officials, the New England Collegiate Field Hockey Umpires Association, and the United States Field Hockey Association.   Voted Connecticut Outstanding Official in 2006, and elected into the Connecticut Field Hockey Hall of Fame in 2014. Diane has done numerous state tournament games, and volunteered at the Amy Romano Field Hockey Jamboree.  She has taught umpiring classes at the Wesleyan College field hockey summer camps, and actively recruits former players to continue to be part of the game. Diane was an Art educator in the Enfield Public Schools and coached basketball and track at Enrico Fermi High School.
